Improving Outcomes in Breast Cancer: Update from the 33rd Annual San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium

Statement of Need
According to the latest data from the American Cancer Society, 1.48 million new cases of cancer were estimated to be diagnosed in 2009 in men and women, exclusive of carcinoma in situ of any site except urinary bladder and basal cell and squamous cell cancers of the skin. It was also projected that there would be 562,340 cancer-related deaths in 2009. Despite some progress in reducing mortality and improving survival, cancer still accounts for all-too-many deaths. Cancer is the cause of 1 in 4 deaths in the US and is responsible for more deaths than heart disease in persons under the age of 85. Among women ages 20 to 59, breast cancer ranks as the leading cause of cancer death. Following a peak of cancer incidence in 1990 for men, and 1991 for women, data compiled through 2005 shows that rates of cancer incidence and death have been decreasing. To continue this trend, it is vital to ensure all clinicians who treat cancer are aware of the latest research and treatment strategies.

Target Audience
The target audience for this activity is medical, surgical, and radiation oncologists, as well as allied oncology healthcare professionals charged with the care of patients with breast cancer.

Educational Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize biologic pathways of significance in breast cancer pathogenesis and resistance and their implications on treatment selection and response
  • Discuss updated efficacy and toxicity data for adjuvant therapy options used in the early breast cancer setting
  • Describe the strengths and weaknesses of significant clinical trials of agents designed to improve response and survival rates in the metastatic breast cancer setting
  • Describe the potential role of novel treatment approaches in the management of breast cancer
  • Compare treatment options available for the treatment of patients with breast cancer with respect to efficacy and toxicity parameters
