Lung Cancer 2008: The Year in Review
Statement of Need
Significant improvements have occurred in the management of lung cancer over the past decade. One of the most widely studied approaches to the field of cancer, particularly lung cancer, is treatment strategies incorporating new agents and novel combinations. With novel pharmacological agents and treatment strategies, the decision-making process for oncology healthcare professionals involved in the treatment of lung cancer is challenging, thereby requiring in-depth knowledge of current clinical and experimental data for the appropriate integration of new therapeutics into clinical practice. As such, this program has been developed to provide a comprehensive overview of recent advances in the treatment of lung cancer. The didactic presentation will be combined with discussions on controversial topics in lung cancer management, thus allowing for an interactive exchange of critical clinical information.
Target Audience
This educational activity is intended for oncologists, oncology specialty pharmacists, and allied oncology healthcare providers caring for patients with lung cancer
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this educational activity, participants should be better able to:
- Describe importance of diagnostic and pathologic evaluation of NSCLC
- Interpret and report studies on adjuvant and neoadjuvant therapy for stage I – stage III NSCLC, including a comparison of the conflicting results in stage I disease
- Describe current therapies for the treatment of NSCLC and their applicability in the adjuvant or neoadjuvant setting
- Describe new studies that utilize targeted agents in the adjuvant regimen or afterwards as maintenance therapy
- Understand the rationale for the development and use of treatment strategies in advanced lung cancer
- Compare the first-line treatment of metastatic NSCLC and the role of newer agents and clinical trials in this population
- Interpret clinical trial results from second-line treatment of metastatic NSCLC
- Outline recent information on risk factors, prevention, identification, and management of serious treatment-related side effects
- Discuss the clinical benefit of bisphosphonates in the management of lung cancer
